An important compendium, drawn from original 1899 Golden Dawn manuscript rituals, and thus quite different to those published by Israel Regardie.

Macgregor Mathers - The Secret Knowledge of the Neophyte

Introduction:

The Neophyte Ceremony, for the Candidate, ended when the
Hierophant stated, "Resu+e your seat in the Nlorthj-Wlest] and remember that your admission to this Order gives you no right to initiate any other person without a dispensation from the Greatly Honoured Chiefs of the Second Order." While the Candidate was in a heightened state of darkness they would hear an address, written by Adepts of the Second Order, that helped shed some light upon their Ceremony of Admission. Other Neophyte Addresses were read at Equinoctial!or Regular Assemblies. The addresses in this book are dated from March 1898 to January 1954. All of the addresses, with the exception of Maim Chioth [Harriet Felkin]'s, were loaned to members to hand copy and return within three months. The address by Deo Date Comite Ferro (S.L. Mathers) was hand-written and read to the Horus Temple in his absence. Even though Mathers states, "In this address I do not ihtend to charge any of you herewith [the sin of Spiritual Pride]," I wonder if he was warding off any future attempts at the Golden Dawn throne, which Westcott left to Mathers when he resigned from the Order in 1897.
The address by Perseverantia (Paul Foster Case) was the only address that was published and sold to members of the Order. His address is very significant because it foreshadows the teaching which he later brought to his esoteric school, the Builders of the Adytum, in 1922. The addresses by Aur Mem Mearab [R.W. Felkin] were read after a Neophyte Ceremony, while the addresses by Maim Chioth were read at
Regular Assemblies. The address by Nunc et Semper (Lilli Geise) is a fine example of the addresses she read in the American Golden Dawn Temples. Appendix A contains the Allocution from the Grade of Neophyte
0°=0° of the Smaragdum Thalasses Temple of the Order of the Stella Matutina and was probably written by Sacramentum Regis

Kuntz, Darcy - The Kabbalah of the Golden Dawn

Introduction:

What is the Jewish Kabbalah? To some persons the sound of the word
will be familiar, though the ideas which it conveys will probably be vague in the extreme, while to many, indeed, the very name will be unknown. What is the Jewish Kabbalah? If we tum to those general storehouses of all kinds of knowledge, the encyclopaedias, we find but bald and unsatisfactory information. Thus Burrowes' Modern Encyclopaedia says: "The Hebrew Cabbala signifies tradition; and the Rabbins who are called Cabbalists, study principally the combination of particular words, letters, and numbers, and by this means pretend to discover what is to come, and to see clearly into the sense of many difficult passages of Scripture. There are no sure principles of this knowledge, but it depends upon some particular traditions of the ancients, for which reason it is termed Cabbala. The secrets of the Cabbala are said to have been discovered to Moses on Mount Sinai; and to have been delivered from him down from father to son, without interruption, and without any use of letters; for to write them down is what they are by no means permitted to do ... There is another Cabbala, called artificial, which consists in searching for abstruse and mysterious signification of a word in Scripture, from whence they borrow certain explanations, by combining the letters which compose it; this Cabbala is divided into three kinds, the gematrie [gematria], the notaricon, and the temura or themura. The first whereof consists in taking the letters of a Hebrew word for cyphers or arithmetical numbers, and explaining every word by the arithmetical value of the letters whereof it is composed. The second sort of Cabbala, called notaricon, consists in taking every particular letter of a word for an entire diction; and the third, called themura, i.e., change, consists in making different transpositions or changes of letters, placing one for the other, or one before the other

Kuntz, Darcy - The Chronology of the Golden Dawn

Introduction:

When I began co-creating this chronology, I soon realised the book would not satisfy all its readers. For example, rather than providing footnotes, we chose to list our primary sources for the chronology in the bibliography. No doubt there will be those who will feel this or that fact should or should not have been included. If we were to attempt to compile a truly comprehensive chronology of the Golden Dawn, it would rival the doorstop edition of Regardie's Complete Golden Dawn (Falcon Press, 1984), and put it out of the price range of most readers. Rather than attempting to be a definitive, all inclusive timeline, this simple book is meant to assist readers and researchers as they study other historical books relating to the Golden Dawn. The Golden Dawn books of the past have traditionally focused on the more exciting and turbulent aspects of the Order. Some readers might get the impression that the Golden Dawn was always in "quarrels and continual disturbance," but this could not be further from the truth. There were many happy and fruitful years within the Order that have been less apparent. Our primary purpose in writing this book is to offer our readers a general overview of the connections and parallels of the Golden Dawn history in a readable chronology. As I worked on my Golden Dawn study series over the several years, I created my own chronology to assist me. After talking with Mary K. Greer, we decided to combine our chronologies and present them to the public so that other scholars, researchers and magicians might have the benefit of these brief and sketchy road maps. We welcome additions and corrections from our readers as we hope to reprint this volume in a moderately expanded format in years to come.
